Philip Herbert is an award-winning British composer with eclectic musical interests. He has written choral and chamber music and music for film, dance and the concert hall.
Herbert has followed a portfolio career, combining teaching, performance, curation, writing for publication, developing and devising workshops and projects, assessing music projects for the Arts Council of England, broadcasting and composing.
Herbert's music has been performed by a variety of ensembles including the BBC Singers, London Mozart Players, Sinfonia Viva, Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Swan, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota and Nashville Symphony orchestras, American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Colorado University Philharmonia, Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey, the Villiers Quartet in residence at the University of Oxford, and a string quartet from London Symphony Orchestra.
Recent projects include Siren Calls: To an Illusive Journey, a commission for the Let’s Dance International Frontiers festival commemorating the Windrush Generation in a string quartet choreographed by Monique Jonas and Thomas Talawa Prestø; a new piece called Towards Renewal commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra for the for the PRS New Music Biennial; and a commission for the Spitalfields Festival.
