Carmel Smickersgill is a composer based in Manchester. Her music exists between the worlds of electronic and acoustic sounds. Working between the worlds of theatres, concert halls and clubs, she was a 2020 Ivor Novello rising star award nominee and a previous recipient of the Rushworth Composition prize with the Liverpool Philharmonic. Other performers she’s written for include, Manchester Camerata, Laura Bowler and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Her debut EP We Get What We Get and We Don’t Get Upset was released in April 2022 with PRAH recordings.
In 2021 she was a recipient of a Jerwood Live art award fund, which she uses to create sustainable and affordable rehearsal spaces and alternative performance opportunities for chamber music in Manchester, under the name Bothy.
Carmel studied at the RNCM in Manchester with Gary Carpenter. More recently Carmel has been mentored by Anna Meredith and has had the pleasure and privilege of being a support act for her live shows on multiple occasions.
