Two awards for Academy researchers have recently been announced.

A Certificate of Merit in the ASRC’s 2024 Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research has been received by Alyn Shipton for his 2023 book examining Mulligan’s musical development during a formative period for the quartet. Since 1991, the ASRC has presented Awards for Excellence to selected authors of books, articles, or recording liner notes to showcase current outstanding work in recorded sound research. The 2024 Awards for Excellence honour works published in 2023, to which Alyn Shipton’s book contributes a detailed view of the scores, transcriptions, arrangements and collaborations that shaped Mulligan’s path to musical triumph.

This work follows from On Jazz: A Personal Journey by Alyn Shipton, published in May 2022 (Cambridge University Press), forming part of the author’s large collection of jazz publications in which Groovin' High: The Life of Dizzy Gillespie (1999) and Nilsson: The Life of a Singer Songwriter (2013) each won ASRC Awards for Excellence.

Meanwhile in the annual Presto Music Awards, five sheet music publications are selected for their fresh and important contributions to musicians, teachers, and conductors. Emily Kilpatrick and Roy Howat’s edition of 15 songs for voice and piano by Gabriel Fauré was among the winners. Translations of the text alongside short introductory notes to the pieces make the repertoire accessible, as a practical edition based on their five-volume critical edition ‘Gabriel Fauré – Complete Songs and Vocalises'.
