What is special for you about performing this music today?

Every singer dreams of performing a Mahler symphony. I fell in love with Mahler’s work early in my studies. His music has a magical quality, particularly in this fourth movement, 'Sehr behaglich', which captures the childlike innocence of Des Knaben Wunderhorn poems. This movement is challenging, featuring coloratura, long lyrical lines and a broad tessitura. I’ve always admired soprano Edith Mathis’ interpretation in her recording with Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic. Performing this piece with a renowned American conductor is a significant moment for me.

Do you have a favourite moment from the work?

The ending of ‘Sehr behaglich’ is breathtaking. The final stanza of the poem describes angels and saints in heaven dancing and singing, with Saint Cecilia and her court musicians filling the heavens with joy. This last section feels as if time itself pauses. The vocal line remains in the middle and lower registers, gradually slowing to a peaceful stop, evoking the sensation of a story ending or a child drifting gently to sleep. It's a serene and magical conclusion.

What has inspired you most during your musical journey at the Academy?

At the Academy, singers are deeply motivated to discover and embrace their individuality. There isn’t a specific set of rules to becoming a singer. Here, especially in the Opera Department, we can explore various roles and collaborate with accomplished conductors, coaches and successful professionals in the industry. We are encouraged to find the arias and operas that ignite our passion and creativity. After my time here I feel prepared to enter the profession. More importantly, I have developed the confidence in my own artistry and know what I want to express as an artist in 2024.

Tell us about your ambitions for the future.

As an American studying here, I am excited to build a career in both America and Europe. Currently, I am deciding which studio I’d like to base myself in while in Europe. While I have a passion for opera, I also have a deep love for song and recital. My goal is to curate my own recitals, particularly those highlighting women composers whose work has been overlooked throughout history. I hope to bring these important voices to the fore and create performances that celebrate their contributions to classical music
