Gareth Small is Principal Trumpet with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester
He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1989 to 1993 and joined the Hallé as Assistant-Principal Trumpet in 1993. He became Principal Trumpet in 2007.
Gareth is a member of London Brass and Hallé Brass and has played with ensembles all over the world. He has also performed as guest Principal Trumpet with most of Britain's Orchestras.
He was soloist in association with the Black Dyke Brass Band in 2016 and won the soloist prize as part of the group at the European Brass Band Championship, playing “Trumpets of the Angels” by Edward Gregson.
Gareth has given solo recitals and masterclasses all over the world. He can be heard on numerous recordings with the Hallé, Ti Adoro (Pavarotti) & Music of the Spheres (Mike Oldfield). He has played on over 100 TV adverts including British Airways, Heineken, Sainsbury's, Famous Grouse and Goodyear Tyres to name a few.
Gareth can also be heard on movie soundtracks including Beauty and the Beast, Pete's Dragon, Bridget Jones' Baby, Hacksaw Ridge, Into the Woods, Mocking Jay (Hunger Games), Disney's Cinderella, Captain America (civil war), The Force Awakens (Star Wars Trailers), Return Of The King (Lord of the Rings), Elizabeth The Golden Age, Evil Dead, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers Endgame, Artemis Fowl, Knives Out, Doctor Doolittle, Dora the Explorer, Death on the Nile, A boy called Christmas and Don’t Look Up.
Gareth teaches Trumpet at the Academy. He also teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music and Chethams School of Music in Manchester.
