In August 2023 Imogen Whitehead was appointed Principal Trumpet of Britten Sinfonia.
She also often performs as Guest Principal Trumpet with ensembles such as the City of London Sinfonia, London Mozart Players and English National Opera.
As a soloist, Imogen has premiered a number of works including Stephen Dodgson’s Trumpet Concerto and Trinculo by Sally Beamish, commissioned for her by the Park Lane Group. Imogen has also undertaken studies with renowned soloist Tine Thing Helseth thanks to funding from the Royal Philharmonic Society.
In 2022 Imogen made her international recital debut in France and recorded Barry Mills’ new concerto for trumpet and flugelhorn with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra (Czech Republic). Having recently performed as a soloist at St Martin-in-the-Fields and with the Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra, Imogen’s future engagements include playing Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto with the Bushey Symphony Orchestra (November) and giving a solo recital at the Bishop’s Palace, Hereford (October), in partnership with the Herefordshire Composers’ Workshop. Imogen aims to champion the flugelhorn and expand its repertoire with new commissions and arrangements. In 2018, she gave World Premiere performances of two flugelhorn concerti, written for her by Aleksandr Brusentsev (Threads, January 2018) and Leo Geyer (Somewhere In-Between, June 2018).
This September Imogen will be Guest Principal Trumpet with Aurora Orchestra for their highly anticipated, memorised performances of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring at the BBC Proms. In the Autumn she will join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for two performances in Italy, before going on a European tour with the London Symphony Orchestra and their new Chief Conductor Antonio Pappano. Imogen is also an alumna of Southbank Sinfonia (2016) and a regular deputy for Les Misérables in the West-End.
