James Cheung has established himself as a much sought-after song pianist and chamber musician.
He has appeared internationally with leading singers and instrumentalists, performing with renowned singers including Christian Gerhaher, Ian Bostridge, Gerald Finley, Joan Rogers, Elizabeth Watts, Elliot Madore, Marcus Farnsworth, Ruby Hughes, Sibylla Rubens, Martin Mitterrutzner, Wiebke Lehmkuhl and Benjamin Appl.
James has performed at Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Düsseldorf Tonhalle, Camerata Musica Cambridge, Oxford Lieder Festival, The Banff Centre, St John’s Smith Square, the Royal Opera House, live broadcasts on BBC television and radio and festivals including Southwell, Aldeburgh and Aix en Provence.
James was presented with The Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics' Award) for his playing on Christian Gerhaher's recording of the complete songs of Schumann, released by Sony.
As a chamber musician, James has partnered with Gerold Huber in piano duets and regularly performs with violinist Agata Daraskaite. He has collaborated with many other instrumentalists and ensembles including Lawrence Power, Maximillian Hornung, Maria Włoszczowska, Guy Johnson, Matilda Lloyd, David Campbell, principles from the Aurora orchestra and the Manchester Collective.
James began his piano studies with Denise Erlandsen at the Royal College of Music Junior Department with Aaron Shorr. After studying with Tatiana Sarkissova at the Academy, James continued his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatoire with Alexander Mndojants and Alexander Bonduriansky.
James frequently attended the Britten-Pears Programme in Aldeburgh. He is an associate of the Academy where he teaches as part of the Ensemble Piano faculty and the Vocal faculty as a coach as well as teaching song classes. He also teaches song interpretation at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich. James teaches at masterclasses internationally including The Banff Centre in Canada, AlpenKammerMusik in Austria and is a regular guest at Schloss Elmau as a performer and teacher.
