GOETZ Piano Quintet in C minor, Op 16
This concert opens with an arrangement of Francis Poulenc’s Miroirs brûlants, originally set to two poems by Poulenc’s friend Paul Éluard. The first – a stream of consciousness describing a sunset – unlocks a world of iridescent turmoil and stirring emotions.
Following works by John Hawkins and Debussy, where nature follows its own course, the programme culminates with Hermann Goetz’s Piano Quintet in C minor. During his compositional career, Goetz earned the admiration of such prominent musicians as the conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow and the composer Johannes Brahms. This piece is dedicated to the latter. Widely cited as his masterpiece, it is Goetz’s last completed chamber work.
