PIAZZOLLA Otoño porteño and Invierno porteño from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
Three fascinating pieces performed by an outstanding ensemble, Fiesole Trio, formed in 2023.
American composer Amy Beach composed her Piano Trio in A minor in 1938, at age 70. Contrastingly, Lera Auerbach’s first trio was written when she was in her late teens and early twenties in the mid-1990s. Yet both composers harken back to older musical traditions – while quoting two Inuit folk songs, Beach’s piece is steeped in late-Romantic influences; Auerbach’s trio contains both unique effects and allusions to 19th and 20th century musical traditions. Then follow two works (Autumn and Winter) from Astor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, a title which inescapably recalls Antonio Vivaldi’s famous masterpiece but which coveys a very different, highly-charged atmosphere.
