Maddalena Casulana dedicated her 1568 book of compositions to Isabella de’ Medici with the following self-assured statement: ‘These first fruits of mine, flawed as they are … show the world the foolish error of men who so greatly believe themselves to be the masters of high intellectual gifts that cannot, it seems to them, be equally common among women.’
Spanning five centuries – from Casulana’s madrigals to pieces by Les Six composer Germaine Tailleferre and Academy graduates Judith Bingham, Roxana Panufik and Trish Clowes – this bold programme showcases the unique power and versatility of brass instruments.
