Programme notes
A Royal Academy student in the 1940s, Jennifer Vyvyan was a distinctive presence in the world of 20th Century English singing: a fiery coloratura soprano who played a key role in the stage revival of Handel’s operas and was closely involved with Benjamin Britten - not least as the first Governess in Turn of the Screw and first Tytania in Midsummer Night’s Dream.
This concert celebrates the centenary of her birth in 1925, with music performed by the current recipient of the Jennifer Vyvyan Award, and words and images presented by music critic Michael White.
