Programme notes
This programme features two contrasting works by Claude Debussy and Dmitri Shostakovich. Debussy’s Piano Trio was written when he was 18 years old and reveals his penchant for lightness and clarity as a young composer. The predominantly joyful mood of this piece is offset by Shostakovich’s expression of sorrow in his second piano trio. With an eerie fugal opening and frequent contrapuntal passages, this work is a poignant tribute to the memory of a close friend who died around the time of its composition; it hovers between piercing precision and unearthly beauty.
